Magnetic resonance imaging without referral

Can an MRI be done without a referral? Can anyone conduct such an examination without a doctor's decision? Magnetic resonance imaging without a referral is possible for private examination. However, in order to perform it, the patient should identify the problem and the reason for performing this form of examination.

Resonance without a referral gives you a chance to perform it quickly, because paying for it, we can get the date and then the result very quickly. In the case of the National Health Fund, unfortunately, getting to the test requires several months of waiting. Private resonance without referral is speed, convenience and confidence that we will quickly get the result we are waiting for.

In our magnetic resonance imaging laboratory in Bielany, we make every effort to ensure that the examination is carried out quickly, efficiently and without unnecessary stress - although MRI does not require special preparations, but before it is performed, it is worth reading the following tips.

Do I need a referral for an MRI scan?

A patient reporting for an examination to our magnetic resonance imaging laboratory in Warsaw does not need a referral - neither from a family doctor nor a specialist doctor.

What documents should I have with me during the examination?

You must have an identity document when registering. We also ask patients to have all medical records related to the area undergoing MRI on the day of the examination: results of previous ultrasound, MRI or CT examinations, hospital discharge reports, medical certificates, etc.

How to prepare for magnetic resonance imaging with contrast?

If the patient is scheduled for magnetic resonance imaging with contrast, the blood creatinine level should be determined not earlier than 7 days before the examination. Creatinine is a substance whose concentration in the body allows you to assess the work of the kidneys - the contrast administered before the test is later excreted with the urine, so it is important that the patient's kidneys function efficiently and the contrast is quickly removed from the body.

Should I have an MRI on an empty stomach?

Before the MRI scan, you can eat and drink normally - just remember not to eat too much. The examination may take up to about an hour, and the patient must remain motionless during this time - it cannot be interrupted, e.g. due to a physiological emergency. The exception is MRI of the small pelvis - in this case it is recommended that the bladder is moderately full, which allows for better images of the organs in the pelvis. Therefore, you must not urinate before the test.

Another special situation is magnetic resonance imaging with contrast - it is recommended that the contrast agent be expelled from the body with urine as soon as possible after the examination, so both before and after the examination, you should drink plenty of water.

Can I take medication before an MRI?

Magnetic resonance imaging - also with the use of contrast - in no way affects the effectiveness of the drugs used on a daily basis - so on the day of the examination, take them as always. Diabetics should ensure that the time of the examination does not conflict with the time of taking insulin.

How to dress for the examination?

Magnetic resonance imaging may be performed while wearing the clothes, provided that there are no metal elements (buttons, buckles, zippers, buckles, underwire) that could interfere with the operation of the device. You should leave all jewelry, glasses, hairpins in the cloakroom, as well as mobile phones, tablets and even payment cards that could be damaged or demagnetized. Ladies are asked to come to the examination without makeup. Some cosmetics contain metal particles, which may also affect the obtained results.

What do I need to inform the staff about before the examination?

Before the MRI, the personnel should be informed about the presence of a pacemaker, insulin pump, hearing aid or intracranial clips in the body - these are absolute contraindications for the examination. The doctor must also know about the presence of metal orthodontic appliances, endoprostheses and orthopedic screws, as well as about the patient's pregnancy or suspicion - then the decision to perform an MRI is individual. It takes into account, inter alia, patient's condition, current medical documentation, health indications, etc.
